Clinical Excellence Grant Program

Advancing infection prevention

The CareFusion Foundation provides grant opportunities for U.S.-based 501(c)(3) organizations working to achieve clinical excellence and establish best practices in healthcare safety and efficiency.

In 2012, the Foundation launched a $500,000 grant program to help identify and share infection prevention best practices across hospitals and healthcare organizations nationwide. In May 2013, we awarded 11 healthcare organizations one-time grants of up to $50,000 each to support programs that aim to improve infection prevention practices.

Programs selected to receive grant funding in 2013 include:

  • Baton Rouge General Medical Center, Baton Rouge, La.
    Expanding antimicrobial stewardship through the use of rapid diagnostics
  • Boston Medical Center, Boston, Mass.
    Preventing post-operative pulmonary complications: ICOUGH education project
  • Children's National Medical Center, Washington, D.C.
    Implementation of standardized infection prevention protocol to eliminate surgical infections in pediatric patients undergoing posterior spinal fusion for scoliosis
  • The Cleveland VA Medical Research & Education Foundation,Cleveland, Ohio
    Monitoring and feedback intervention to improve the quality of preoperative bathing
  • NYU Langone Medical Center, New York, NY
    The effects of antibiotic stewardship on surgical site infection rates at an orthopedic institution
  • Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Penn.
    Prospective evaluation of procedural povidone iodine rectal preparation (PIRP) to reduce infectious complications following ultrasound guided prostate needle biopsy
  • RML Specialty Hospital, Hinsdale, Ill.
    The impact of managing clutter on infection rates in a long-term acute care hospital
  • Sharp Healthcare Foundation, San Diego, Calif.
    “It's OK to Ask” hand hygiene education and awareness program
  • St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, Syracuse, NY
    Collaborative pilot program to reduce C. difficile rates in a long-term care environment
  • University of Colorado Hospital, Aurora, Colo.
    Determining high-touch areas in the operating room with levels of contamination
  • Wayne State University Hospital
    Automating surveillance for ventilator associated events

The application period for Clinical Excellence Grants is now closed. We intend to announce the 2013-2014 Clinical Excellence Grant program later this year, including funding criteria and guidelines for submitting grant proposals.
