We are changing the design and operation of the PleurX® 500mL drainage bottle in order to enhance our portfolio and provide you and your patients with improved flexibility. The design of this new 500ml bottle is based on our current 1000mL vacuum bottle.
Please note that the code numbers will be changed to have a "B" designation and that you should expect to see these new bottles during the first week of January, 2010.
New codes will be as follows:

The design of this bottle will bring several advantages, including the following:
- Provides improved flexibility in drainage sizes as patients can be trained on one procedure versus the two that are currently required.
- Utilizes a foil-manufactured seal to ensure the vacuum is maintained. This helps to reduce the risk of losing vacuum pressure that could occur if the slide clamp is inadvertently moved in the current version.
- Eliminates the need for scissors, or other implements required to empty the current bottle.
- Has extended expiration dating expected to be about 3-4 months incrementally to the current version.
If you have been using the 1000mL bottle, the primary difference will be the size, and the fact that the new bottle is clearer.
The basic drainage procedure remains relatively unchanged. Operationally, there are two primary areas that are different in the revised design compared to the current bottle. These are in the activation of the vacuum and the emptying of the bottle. A summary of these changes is here.
